The brief
A commercial photography site has one job. Show the work, at the right size, fast enough that nobody waits for it. Clients arrive to judge quality and fit, usually with a specific commission already in mind, and they decide quickly. Anything that delays the first image costs the enquiry.
The difficulty is that good photography is heavy. Full-width images at the resolution the work deserves will sink a page load, particularly on a phone, and a working photographer changes the portfolio often. The site had to be fast, and it had to be updatable without a developer in the loop.
The approach
We built the portfolio around image performance. Modern formats, responsive sizes generated automatically on upload, and lazy loading below the fold, so a gallery serves a file suited to the device rather than the largest one available. The work stays sharp on a large screen and light on a phone.
The interface is deliberately quiet. Minimal chrome, restrained typography, navigation that stays out of the frame. Galleries are organised by type of commission so a client reaches relevant examples in one move, and each set runs in the order Karen chooses rather than the order things were uploaded.
The outcome
The portfolio is quick to load, quick to update and easy to send to a client.
